war hurts women and children the most because they are left to deal with the after-effects far beyond the "end of war"... and are almost NEVER at the negotiating table. rape as a weapon of war, that would make a strong painting... or even the us military raping its own soldiers (in the air force 1 in 5 women, 1 in 20 men).
